Human Factors Engineering

This is a one-hour course that will introduce human factors terminology and human factors concepts such as the built environment; coefficient of friction; cognitive reaction time; expectation; line of sight; gait patterns; and reasonable care to name a few. This course will discuss how human factors concepts can be used in the evaluation of personal injury events on walking surfaces, working surfaces, motor vehicle accidents, and a variety of other engineering investigations.
Introduction - 5 minutes
Human Factors Definitions from: the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society; scientific literature; and the Transportation Research Board – 5 minutes
Discussion of terminology and concepts including definitions and example discussions – 15 minutes
Interdisciplinary Evaluation, ASTM E678: evaluation of scientific or technical data, ASTM F1637: Standard Practice for Safe Walking Surfaces – 10 minutes
Slip, trip and fall injury checklist: file materials required – 10 minutes
General Duty Clause and OSHA Regulations (creating employer, exposing employer, correcting employer, controlling employer) – 5 minutes
Vehicular collisions – 5 minutes
Q&A – 5 minutes

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: JODY DEMARCO, P.E.
Mr. DeMarco has more than 30 years of engineering experience encompassing commercial and residential design and construction; roadway and highway design and construction; bridge design and construction; site and civil design; forensic investigations; litigation support and expert testimony.
Mr. DeMarco is a founding member and the Vice President of Engineering of FCNA Partners, Inc. He is responsible for the engineering oversight of the company and preparation of all engineering documents. He performs engineering investigations and has provided expert testimony on more than sixty occasions. He has been court qualified as an expert in civil engineering, structural engineering, and human factors.
Mr. DeMarco is a member of the National Academy of Forensic Engineer, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society. Mr. DeMarco earned his B.S. degree in Engineering from Rutgers University. Mr. DeMarco also earned a Quality Management Certificate from Penn State University. Mr. DeMarco is a licensed professional engineer in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. Mr. DeMarco was awarded the City of Philadelphia Department of Streets Outstanding Achievement Award, and he is also the recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Millennium Challenge Project Award. In addition to providing in-house training for experts, Mr. DeMarco has also been a guest lecturer at the University of New Haven, and presenter for HalfMoon Education, Inc.
