    On an inflation-adjusted basis, 2020 was the second-costliest year on record for thunderstorm-related damage in the U.S. Most year of the insured losses resulted from hail damage is the driver of the industry loss.  Due to increasing awareness over the last several years regarding the increase in insured hail losses, insurance companies have been arming themselves with analytics; hail swath report maps which now seem to be a dime a dozen are widely used by insurance companies. Roofers are also using these hail maps to find work.  However, some things should be known about these products which will be one component of this talk.  The other component will be how the hail maps can be used to improve customer satisfaction and profitability during these costly catastrophic events. BMS RE US is drawing upon its broad, national client-base to provide important insights to insurance companies, helping them better understand and utilize the information in hail swath reports. In this talk, we will discuss how insurance claims data from destructive hail events adds value beyond the standard hail swath maps by offering improved claims rates and exposed loss ratios.

    About the Presenter

    Andrew Siffert is an  Vice President and Senior Meteorologist within BMS Re US Catastrophe Analytics team for 9 years.  He works closely with clients to help them manage their weather related risks by adding value through catastrophe response, catastrophe modelling, product development and scientific research and education.  He has 19 years of industry experience having worked in the energy and insurance industry focusing his meteorological knowledge on helping companies manage their weather risks. Prior to joining BMS, Andrew worked for FlagstoneRe as a CAT Project Manager / Meteorologist and was responsible for developing LiveCAT products, frontline research, and analytics used in the underwriting process. He has also worked at ACE Group with the development of ACE Global Weather Insurance products and helped pioneer the weather derivatives market and energy trading markets while working at Aquila Energy Corp. Andrew has educational background that spans the sciences with a master’s degree in meteorology from the University of Utah and was member of the 2002 Olympic weather support team.

    Hail damage is one of the least understood and most often disputed types of property damage.  The many reasons for this will be explored.  Specific technical expertise is necessary to identify hail damage and every hailstorm is different in size, direction, intensity.  To complicate matters, other types of damage can mimic hail damage and it is sometimes imitated by mechanical means.  Further, field information is often difficult to obtain involving potentially dangerous access to sloped roofs.  Isett has performed hundreds of hail inspections and can draw from a wealth of case studies to illustrate the complexities.  Both residential and commercial roofs will be explored along with plenty of photographs.

    Thomas Chapasko, Supervisory Forensic Auditor, FISD East II District Manager, ATF 

    This session takes a look at the added value of investigative services that Forensic Auditors with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives bring to investigating arson cases.  Tom will present information on the financial red flags to look for in a financially motivated fires, the gathering of records at the scene and after the scene, the importance of interviews, working with the Insurance company under the Arson Immunity Letter, and technology updates that aid in financial investigations.  This will be an informative and interactive presentation using investigative examples from Tom’s career in conducting arson investigations for ATF.

    Prominent Plaintiff’s Counsel Scott Cooper (Schmidt Kramer) and Defense Attorney Joshua Bovender (Thomas, Thomas & Hafer) will discuss the Plaintiff’s perspective on current issues.  The presentation will provide an overview of the latest UM/UIM case law, including policy interpretation, coverage and exclusion issues, and review of cases in the appellate pipeline.  There will be a complete discussion of the Gallagher v. GEICO case which involved the “household exclusion.”  In addition, will discuss how the Gallagher case may or may not apply to future cases and recent developments on Ride-sharing issues.

    Liability claims arising out of dog bites continue to rise and cause headaches for insurers: 4.5 million dog bites occur per year; 300,000+ emergency room visits for dog bites of which over 30,000 involved children between the ages of 5 and 9. Who is to blame – the dog, the circumstances surrounding the attack, or some intentional act by the owner. Regardless, insurers continue to evaluate the best way to manage these claims which often co-mingle intentional acts with the potential for nuclear verdicts. Some insurers have sought to limit their liability through various policy exclusions while others through the underwriting process only to have those efforts challenged by injured claimants, their own insureds and even the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. During this session, participants will engage in an interactive discussion that covers a variety of topics ranging from underwriting fraud and its impact on the claim, dog bite laws, evaluating your insureds’ defenses during the claim investigation and damages. Our panel will also address the impact of a new player in this arena – the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and its efforts to nullify dog bite exclusions through administrative proceedings.

    Have you seen the quarterly PAMIC Pulse magazine? The Pulse is a mutual insurance industry publication that aims to help companies understand emerging issues. Articles in the Pulse offer advice on how to grow and protect business. The impact of the Pulse reaches throughout the Mid-Atlantic states through readers from our many member companies.

    The Summer Pulse edition focuses on a variety topics. Articles should be between 500-1000 words and submissions must be approved by PAMIC.
