10:00am - 11:00am: The P/C Industry in PA and the Mid-Atlantic: Statistics and Outlook

This presentation will provide an industry review of 2020 from a statistical and performance point of view, with a particular focus on mutual companies in the mid-Atlantic region. The presentation will also provide an outlook on key themes and issues affecting the P/C industry in 2021 and beyond.

Jeff will be speaking on the topic of corporate transactions. His presentation will give a perspective on the state of the market for M&A activity as well as corporate restructuring. Additionally, Jeff will provide insight into the future financial, operational, and regulatory pressures that insurers are likely to face and the options that are available to address those pressures.

The session will focus on emerging issues in both the severe thunderstorm and hurricane perils. Discussion topics will include recent events in context, the 2020 hurricane season, emerging trends, with treatment of uncertainties and modeling issues. Resilience measures will also be discussed, toward reduction of impacts from extreme events.

However, with any model, there are strengths and weaknesses and simple ways to validate the model performance which will be attempted in this session.

In this presentation, we will provide: an overview of the recent dynamics in the cyber insurance space, insight into the shifting exposure, a discussion of the looming threat of a cyber catastrophe, an overview of available insurance coverages, tips on what a small business can do to minimize their cyber exposure, and insight into the future of cyber insurance including the emerging personal lines space.

Emerging issues has cost the Property/Casualty insurance industry hundreds of billions of dollars in unexpected claims. Today insurers and reinsurers are facing a plethora of emerging issues. In this presentation we’ll cover the growth spurt in billion dollar plus emerging issues and focus on violence and E-cigarettes/vaping. Charlie will also touch on several additional emerging issues that are additional billion dollar plus contenders.
Charlie Kingdollar is now retired, but for nearly 40 years he built his career as the Vice President & Emerging Issues Officer at Gen Re, becoming the go-to futurist for the insurance industry. He is a celebrated keynote speaker and has spoken at almost all U.S. major insurance industry conferences in the U.S. Outside of the U.S., he has given various emerging issues presentations in 14 countries. While at Gen Re, he authored hundreds of client publications and blogs on a wide variety of emerging issues, many translated into multiple languages for the international market. He has had articles published by, and has been quoted in, various insurance industry publications. Kingdollar continues to post emerging issues information regularly on LinkedIn.
