Julie Webb, founder of JMW Collective and prior insurance industry professional
In an industry facing an accelerating wave of retirements, the question isn’t just who comes next, it’s what knowledge, culture, and leadership legacy will come with them. This session challenges leaders to rethink onboarding as the starting point of belonging and succession planning as a daily practice, not a distant plan.
Designed for insurance C-suite leaders, this conversation moves beyond traditional talent strategies to explore how connection, psychological safety, and intentional knowledge transfer shape resilient organizations. Participants will examine how to embed mentorship, capture institutional expertise, and create environments where emerging leaders are not only prepared but deeply engaged.
Attendees will leave with practical strategies to strengthen belonging from Day One, activate succession pipelines, and ensure critical knowledge doesn’t walk out the door but is shared and scaled for the future.
10:00 - 11:00 am: Mergers & Acquisitions
Jeff Waldron, Griffin Financial
This presentation will begin with a statistical review of recent M&A activity in the mutual insurance industry. It will then proceed to discuss the range of mutual M&A structures and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
We will explore mutual affiliation and its key elements, with a focus on how the mutual holding company structure can be used to facilitate strategic transactions. It will examine scenarios such as mutual affiliations involving a mutual holding company where an existing shareholder is taken out, as well as sponsored conversions.
To provide practical insight, the session will include case studies of different structural approaches, including Norfolk and Dedham’s affiliation with Union Mutual Fire, Northern Neck’s acquisition of Frederick Mutual, and Old Republic’s sponsored conversion for Everett Cash Mutual.
